Research Experiences for Teachers at Northeastern University

The Research Experiences for Teachers (RET) program at Northeastern University is a six-week summer research experience for middle and high school mathematics and science teachers and Community College STEM faculty. Participants work in research laboratories affiliated with the Colleges of Sciences and Engineering. Supporting professional development is led by program alumni and partner faculty affiliated with the Center for STEM Education.

Funding for the RET program have been provided by federal and private sources, including the National Science Foundation.

Media Coverage of Summer 2010 RET Poster Session
August 10, 2010 - For six weeks this summer, Boston-area high school students and educators ventured into Northeastern University’s engineering and science laboratories for the opportunity to collaborate with leading faculty on innovative research projects. (Play Video)

These experiences were made possible though two highly selective programs: the Young Scholars Program, which this year included just 18 high school students, and the Research Experiences for Teachers program, with only 23 high school teachers and community college faculty participating this summer.

Both programs are overseen by Northeastern’s Center for STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) Education, and are funded by the National Science Foundation, the Department of Homeland Security and by other public and by private foundations. More...

Networking Meeting (8:30 - 12:00)
This informal session provides an opportunity for networking among former RET participants and program administrators representative of a variety of programs and geographic locations; provides an opportunity for sharing classroom connections, successes, and obstacles "back in the classroom"; and discusses useful professional development and other programmatic strong points.

Research Experience for Teachers (RET) Poster Session (12:00 - 1:30)
RET programs, found at many universities throughout the country, are changing the face of science education in the United States and abroad. This session will provide attendees with the opportunity to learn about research conducted by RET participants across the country and to get information on upcoming opportunities.
